Minnesota Opera Orchestra musicians—who are represented by the Twin Cities Musicians Union, American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Local 30-73—have unanimously voted to approve a strike authorization after management proposed a second consecutive contract that contained no wage increases.
During negotiations for their previous agreement in 2023, members approved a provision that established a guaranteed minimum salary for musicians, even though it meant a pay cut, out of consideration for how the pandemic had impacted the organization. However, if the Minnesota Opera’s current contract proposal is adopted, AFM members would go eight years without a cost-of-living increase. This disappointing offer from management is especially insulting given that the opera authorized an 18% to 20% increase in salaries for the opera’s top four paid administrative positions over the past four years.
“We want to see Minnesota Opera grow again — producing more opera for our community and building on the artistic excellence that has defined this company for generations,” the union said in a statement. “A strong orchestra is essential to that future. We are committed to working this out and beginning the season with a new contract and a renewed commitment to the future of Minnesota Opera.”
