Employees at Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry announced their plans to unionize on August 31st and are now seeking voluntary recognition from MOHAI’s management.
MOHAI Workers United — which would represent 32 museum staff in visitor services, collection resources, education, marketing, fundraising, programs, exhibits and special event departments — intends to unionize with Communications Workers of America Local 7800, part of a national organization that represents employees in telecommunications, media, customer service and education. MOHAI workers planned to hold a rally Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Lake Union Park, where MOHAI is located.
Over 70% of eligible MOHAI employees signed union authorization cards prior to Monday’s announcement, said Emily Turner, a K-12 and youth program coordinator who is part of the union’s organizing committee, in a phone call Tuesday. MOHAI Workers United hopes to form a “wall-to-wall” union to advocate for better working conditions for all employees, Turner said.
