Activists Launch “Patrons for the Kennedy Center” to Defend Arts and Democracy

Chris Garlock | Published on 3/31/2025
A small group of activists has been making waves at the Kennedy Center by donning vests reading “Hands Off the Arts!” and handing out flyers urging public support for the arts. Encouraged by positive responses, organizers — including Karen Nussbaum and Debbie Schneider — are now expanding the effort into a broader network: Patrons for the Kennedy Center. The initiative aims to rally defenders of arts and democracy amid escalating attacks on cultural institutions. Trump’s targets include dance companies like Complexions, the Cuban Eclectico festival, and Smithsonian exhibits such as The Shape of Power.  “And while the National Gallery of Art hasn't been targeted yet,” Nussbaum says, “stunning exhibits like Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist will put them in the cross-hairs.” Organizers warn this is part of a broader authoritarian strategy to control culture and morale, particularly in Washington, D.C. Click here for updates and action alerts. “This is a fight that can engage unlikely activists—and feed our souls,” Nussbaum says.
