Labor Heritage Foundation Communications Coordinator Lawrence Smoot is retiring, for the second time. Smoot
came on board at LHF in 2021 after retiring from CWA, where he’d served as a Technical Assistant in the Legislative Department, as well as an OPEIU Local 2 shop steward. He was also Director of Membership for the AFA-CWA for two years and was one of the founding officers of the Washington – Baltimore Pride At Work chapter. “Working at LHF has been an extraordinary journey,” Smoot said, “one that mirrors the trust, collaboration, and warmth of a dedicated family. It has been a privilege to work for an organization that harnesses the transformative power of the arts to embolden individuals, elevate marginalized voices, and ignite unified action in the fight for justice and dignity for workers worldwide. As the ‘Art and Soul of the Labor Movement,’ LHF not only inspires solidarity but equips communities with tools to dismantle inequity. In these pivotal times, its vision and lessons are not just valuable, they are essential. For this and more, I will remain a proud supporting member of the Labor Heritage Foundation.”
Said former LHF Executive Director Elise Bryant, “It has been a joy to work with Larry, who just happens to be a great bass singer, a clever comedian and a social media whiz! We wish him the best in all his future endeavors and may ‘The Spirit of the Squirrel’ be with him!”
In addition to planning “A lot of camping and kayaking through the summer and fall, photography, and finishing that fiction novel that’s I’ve been poking at for years,” Lawrence is looking forward to “Spending lots of time laughing with friends.”
