National History Day contest features labor history

Four of the winning entries in this year’s National History Day contest had a labor focus, reports Mark Pattison. From Nashua-Plainfield Junior-Senior High School in Charles City, IA, Ava Kirk and Elexa O'Neill were first-place winners for “Point, Click, Shoot: Lewis Hine’s Photographs Create a Turning Point for Child Labor”. Chana Oden, Kayla DeBlois, Morgan Walker, and Nevaeh Dowell from Ola Middle School in McDonough, GA won for their report on “The Washerwomen Strike of 1881”. From Sierra Vista Middle School in Irvine, CA, Henry Wiechmann won for his report on “East L.A. Walkouts: Launching a Movement.” And Sami Stanley from Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, SD, won for “’Sí, Se Puede!’: How Dolores Huerta and César Chávez Sparked a Turning Point in the Rights of Migrant Farm Workers.” The contest is designed to help students develop skills in communication, project management, and historical thinking; the complete winner’s list is here.
