RUDOLPH THE UNION REINDEER
Tune: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Lyrics: Julie McCall
Rudolph the Union reindeer
Pulled the sleigh for old St. Nick
He signed a Union contract
He knew North Pole politics
All of the other reindeer
Worked long hours around the clock
They paid no heed to Rudolph
They worked in non-union shops
Then one year on Christmas Eve
They all came to say,
"We will do what you advise
Rudolph, help us organize!"
Then how the reindeer loved him
As they lined up with their sleigh
Now when they work on Christmas
They're all getting premium pay!
- My father was the Artists/Repertoire man who, after it was booted
out of every major record company across the nation, thought that "Rudolph
The Red-Nosed Reindeer" was hit material. Three days onto his new job as
head of the children's educational record department, and still on
probation, the song came upon his desk. After two bitter arguments with
the then president of Columbia records, he was told, "Well Hecky, you will
either remain or be fired based on your own judgement -- or lack of it. My
father stuck with his beliefs, and the world has the song as a result. I
was at the recording with Gene Autry. I mention this because my parents
were ardent union members and supporters of workers rights, human rights
etc. Were my dad alive, he'd love the idea of Rudolph organizing! Happy
Holidays!
